Wilderness Proposal

The Manti-La Sal Conservation Alternative Wilderness Proposal represents recommended wilderness areas for alternative analysis in the Forest Plan Revision process. The Wilderness Proposal also represents proposed boundaries for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System via an Act of Congress. The Wilderness Proposal, in part, represents the combination and unification of the Utah Environmental Congress and the Utah Forest Network wilderness proposals that were drafted in 2004 and 2005, respectively. The boundaries of the Wilderness Proposal were reviewed and updated in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021 using current agency and state GIS data and aerial imagery. On the Monticello Ranger District, areas have been excluded from proposed wilderness units based on a proposal submitted to decision makers by Utah Diné Bikéyah in March, 2015. Units labeled PROVISIONAL: On the North Zone of the Manti-La Sal, some areas proposed for wilderness designation are encumbered by existing leases for coal. These lands are provisionally proposed for wilderness, based on disposition of said leases and the consent of lease holders.
